Prospects and problematic issues of formation and development of hydrogen energy in Ukraine

Yaroslav Doroshenko, M. Karpash, Serhii Stetsiuk, R. Babelsky, V. Volovetsky
Abstract

The role of hydrogen in the decarbonization of Ukraine's economy, ensuring stability and increasing the flexibility of the entire energy system and the development of renewable energy has been established. The expediency of gas industry transformation in the direction of hydrogen energy and the expediency of its leadership in the process of building a hydrogen economy have been substantiated. Factors that will contribute to such a transformation have been identified. Some of the most important pilot projects in the world have been considered. They will lay the foundations and launch the world's hydrogen energy. The data on the current state of the hydrogen economy and forecasts of its growth provided by leading world analysts have been given. Ukraine's capabilities in the formation and development of hydrogen energy have been considered and the factors that create an urgent need for action in this direction have been identified. Problematic issues of hydrogen energy launch are described and recommendations for their solution are given. It is recommended to bring in measures to take advantage of the window of opportunities for hydrogen export and carbon dioxide storage, which will be obtained during the production of low-carbon hydrogen in both Ukraine and the European Union. Recommendations on key areas of research and development of education for the transformation of Ukraine's gas industry in the direction of hydrogen energy have been provided. The existing technologies of hydrogen production, their positive and negative sides and opportunities for effective deployment have been considered. Different technologies of hydrogen production have been compared and a forecast on their prospects has been made. Types of hydrogen transport have been considered, among which the emphasis is put on pipeline transport. It is indicated which criteria the pipeline system must meet in order for the production and transportation of hydrogen to be as efficient as possible. The expediency of using gas infrastructure for transportation of gas-hydrogen mixtures and pure hydrogen has been substantiated. The influence of adding hydrogen to natural gas on the quality of the gas mixture, transport parameters, tightness of pipelines, compression, reduction of the gas mixture, its underground storage, safety and durability of pipelines have been considered
